Every year since 1996, the Dallas Assembly of the
Brotherhood of St. Andrew has partnered with Dallas Area Habitat for
Humanity to construct a home with a deserving family in the City of
Dallas. The Brotherhood raises the funds needed for materials and
organizes volunteers to build the house. Over the years many
Chapters of the Brotherhood in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas have
participated in this worthwhile ministry
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity selects a
deserving family that is qualified to purchase the home. Once
qualified, a Habitat family must put in 400 hours of "sweat equity"
on their home as their down payment, and they obtain a 30 year
no-interest loan from Habitat for the current $80,000 purchase
price. Typically, the monthly payments for principal, taxes and
insurance on their new three bedroom, two bath, central heat and
air-conditioned home are less than the rent the family is paying for
substandard rental housing.
The Habitat "builds" which take place each Fall are
chronicled weekly on this site to enable the volunteer workers and
other interested persons to view pictures and see the construction
progress. Use the links at the left for a chronicle of each year's
Habitat project. A link to the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity site
is also provided.
On September 6th, construction began on the
Brotherhood's 13th Habitat house at 4714 Joseph Wiley in east
Dallas. The Dedication of the new home of Lorraine Wells and her family
will be Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 PM. Look for an announcement
about the Dedication on the main page a few weeks before hand for details. |
